How Does the VSC System Works?

The main function of VSC is to help prevent wheel slip and loss of traction by decreasing engine power and separately applying brake force to each of the four wheels.  The VSC system of Toyota takes into consideration many sensors such as:

  • Yaw Rate sensor
  • Steering angle sensor
  • ABS
  • Traction control sensors

When the VSC system takes to control, it generates stability correction to immediately place the vehicle back into the “Stable operation”, thereby reducing the number of road accidents.

The VSC is just like the internal traction control system of the car. The VSC system jerks to life whenever you drive through slippery roads and lose traction, thereby helping you steer the car properly. Each wheel of the car has electronic sensors that communicate with the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) of the car.

When the driver encounters steering control problems, the VSC system automatically reduces engine speed, while giving braking power to the wheels. The wheel sensors will then pass on information about the horizontal and vertical motion of the wheels. So, if you notice the check VSC system light coming on, you could have problems with your sensors or the steering rack.

What does it mean when Toyota sienna VSC light comes on?

The Toyota Sienna VSC light comes on when there is a faulty VSC system. In some cases, this light may be accompanied with an ABS light, Check Engine Light or Traction Control Light. If the VSC light on your Toyota Sienna comes on, it is advisable to get your computer scanned for codes.  You will likely be able to pull a code from the PCM that will help you locate the problem.

VSC Toyota light Reset: How to Reset VSC Light on Toyota Corolla and other Toyota cars

It should not be hard to reset the VSC light if you have a scan gauge.

  • Switch on the engine to ACC
  • Long press the odometer until it reads the actual mileage
  • Completely switch off the engine and turn it on again but press the odometer button this time.
  • This should be able to clear the VSC light.

However, if this fails to work, it could be linked to problems with the wheel sensors that transmit information to the onboard computer. The sensors get worn out with time.

Read the trouble codes from your car with an OBD2 scanner to ensure the troubleshooting is easier.

Bottom line

The main function of the VSC system in many Toyota vehicles is for traction control at any time the vehicle starts skidding. The system works in unification with the ABS. The VSC uses sensors, which can begin to break down as the sensors get worn out. Try resetting the VSC light if it is always on. If this fails to work, consult a trained mechanic to replace the sensor.
