You start your car every day by inserting the key, turning the ignition, shifting the gear, and then pressing the pedal, but have you ever wondered what makes the car move when the pedal is pressed? It is the Electronic Throttle Control that makes it possible.

The Electronic Throttle Control is a technology that links the gas pedal electronically to the throttle. There is no cable connecting the throttle to the pedal but there is a transferred signal that is understood by the throttle once that pedal is pushed. The Electronic Throttle Control is a system that is made up of three parts: the accelerator pedal, the throttle valve, and an engine control module (ECM).

These three parts or components have individual functions that affect the performance of the vehicle. The accelerator pedal has two or more car sensors and the throttle valve is electrically operated by a motor called the electric throttle body. This electric throttle body is the engine control module (ECM) and it is also known as the powertrain control module (PCM). It is software that uses the data measured by the sensors. Service Electronic Throttle Control

A lit electronic throttle control light is an indication that there is a problem. The sensor is telling you that a replacement or resetting has to be done. To know exactly what to do thoroughly follow the steps below.

Step 1: Diagnose the Vehicle

To be sure of the exact problem, check your vehicle for any trouble codes and get them fixed. Also, check your Powertrain Control Module system for faults. Then check the engine of the car for any air leakage. Likewise, check the filter cap seals, PCV system, and dipstick for faults.

If everything is in order, then proceed with the resetting process. But if the codes relate to either wrong idle speed, air circulation sensor, pressure in the exhaust, or lit engine light, do not reset your Electronic Throttle Control.

Step 2: Regulate the Temperature

Regulate the temperature of your vehicle to the normal functioning temperature. Proceed to check that the ignition timing is in accordance with the manufacturer’s recommendations. In order not to overload the engine and affect the position of the throttle plate,  put off the air conditioner,  radio, rear window defogger, and heater. Step 3: Fully Release the Gas Pedal

Proceed to reset the throttle control by first releasing the gas pedal of any pressure. To do this, turn on the ignition for not more than 2 seconds before turning it off for 10 seconds. Ensure that you do not ignite the engine. Turn on the ignition again for another 2 seconds and then turn it off again and wait for another 10 seconds. This is to signal the computer system of your vehicle of the open and closed position of the gas pedal.

Step 4: Turn on and  off the Ignition

Turn on the ignition for 4 seconds. Immediately you turn it off, press the gas padel for times and release it after 5 seconds. Relax for about 8 seconds and then press down the gas pedal for about 20 seconds. This should stabilize the fluctuating engine check light and keep it on. After the light becomes stable, remove your foot from the gas pedal exactly 3 seconds after.

Step 5: Allow Engine to Idle

When all the above-mentioned have been done, start your car’s engine and allow it to idle for few minutes. Within a space of 20 seconds rev the engine severally. This is to ensure that the idle speed is within the manufacturer’s recommendations.

If after all this you are not successful, you will have to repeat the process. Turn off the car for about 60 seconds and try again. If you are successful, then the procedure is complete and you are done.
