A clogged catalytic converter fix is a necessary maintenance procedure to perform if you need your vehicle to function smoothly at its optimal capacity and so in this post, we are all about everything clogged catalytic converter symptoms so you can know when to start sorting for a solution to prevent major damage.

Whether you are looking to know what are the common symptoms of a Clogged Catalytic Converter, or you just want my response to the query “Can a clogged catalytic converter cause a misfire”? as the title suggests, we will cover all that. Also, read 3 Cheapest Ways to Fix Catalytic Converter

So let’s get right into the topic and we start with the question, can a clogged catalytic converter cause a misfire? Also, read Catalytic Converter Scrap Price List and Worth.

Can a clogged catalytic converter cause a misfire

To answer this question let’s first the main function of a catalytic converter in the car.

Well, the catalytic converter in a car is actually responsible for regulating the emotion within the internal combustion system of the car engine.   They are set up in the exhaust systems to deliver the right oxidation for the car and to also help reduce toxic by-products from fuel to a less harmful substance.

So if vehicles were to be running without a catalytic converter, the thing is we will be having the car produce toxic by-products like nitrogen oxides, carbon monoxide, and hydrocarbons which are harmful to man but also depletes the ozone and nature generally.

But cat converter reduces the production of those toxic waste and instead less hazardous substances carbon dioxide, water vapor, and nitrogen gas are what is produced.

Can a clogged catalytic converter cause a misfire

Back to answering the question “Can a clogged catalytic converter cause a misfire” well yes is the answer, but is not always the factor of the case that could cause a misfire. So here is a clogged catalytic converter can cause a misfire.  When the catalytic converter is clogged causes the car to lose power. This then prevents the easy flow of gas through the car exhaust pipe and engine thereby stopping smoke from easily coming out which results in a misfire.

Though a clogged cat can cause a misfire, however a misfiring car in most cases will be caused by a bad spark plug or a bad cylinder which was discussed in this article on Symptoms of Spark Plug Misfire When Driving.

Symptoms of a Clogged Catalytic Converter ( clogged catalytic converter symptoms)

So let’s quickly go through other signs of having a clogged catalytic converter problem. Like I said above when your catalytic converter is clogged and your vehicle is misfiring, it generally means your car is losing power in most case scenarios, but below are some other signs and symptoms of a bad catalytic converter.

5 Symptoms of a Clogged Catalytic Converter

  • #1-Loses of Power:

When your catalytic converter is clogged the first thing your vehicle might experience is a power loss and this is because the clog prevents the easy exchange of mixture between engine and exhaust making the car start losing power. Mind you a power loss could be caused by multiple issues resulting from just having a bad catalytic converter.

  •     #2- Engine Misfire:

So the next symptom of a clogged catalytic converter is a misfiring engine. So sometimes, there could be occasions where raw fuel starts entering the catalytic converter which ignited it and then resulting in to misfire engine and overheating of the catalytic converter.

This is not something to be overlooked else the heat on the converter might make it melt which can cause serious harm to your car exhaust.

  •   #3-  Car Performance Issues:

If your catalytic converter is clogged and is overheating and misfiring for so long, your car exhaust might become stuck in your catalytic converter of which can lead to performance issues.

Due to the backlog of pressure that has affected the cat converter, this could interfere with how your engine is running and will prevent the engine from breathing smoothly.

Besides that, normally a quick or sudden rise of pressure on your car can cause the engine to stall while driving.

  •  #4- Lower Fuel Economy:

Next on this is poor fuel economy. A catalytic converter that is clogged, bad can cause an irregular distribution of fuel and even inefficient use of fuel. This is so when the clog has affected other components and areas of your car engine making it start requiring more fuel to operate or run.

So, if you noticed suddenly your car started requiring more fuel frequently than normal then you might want to check for clog on your cat

  •    #5- Increased Emissions

This one is not only caused as a result of a clogged cat but due to a generally damaged catalytic converter resulting from excessively adding antifreeze or oil to your car engine.

Too much oil and engine antifreeze products can bring about contamination in the catalytic converter which prevents it from working right and thereby might lead to excessive fluid or gas emission.

When this occurs, you will notice a high level of emission of carbon composites from the exhaust. This is not to be taken lightly. You should plan on cleaning, repairing, changing, or replacing your catalytic converter as soon as possible.

How to unclog a catalytic converter

You can remove a Cat converter blockage to fix and unclog the catalytic converter. To perform this task these are the tools that you’ll be needing when unclogging a catalytic converter:

  •  Get a sizeable container
  •  get a car degreaser
  •  You will need a penetrating oil
  •  A floor car  jack
  •  Jack stands
  •   Get impact car wrench
  •   And lastly pressure washer

Here are the steps on How to unclog a catalytic converter

  •  Let the exhaust system cool off so that you don’t get burned.
  •  Next, lift the car up and suspend it with jack stands
  •  Take out the oxygen sensor(s).
  •  Before you remove the bolts, make sure you apply some oil.
  •  After removing the cat converter, make sure you inspect it. If you hear a loud rattling sound, you should stop as the catalytic converter parts are likely to be broken. If you do not hear any sound, the process should continue.
